Taking The Bad Out Of The Habit

Some people bite their nails, and tell themselves that this is a bad habit that they should go ahead and break. Unfortunately, nail biting is a deeply ingrained behavior pattern, and it’s not so simple as just deciding not to do it anymore.

Deciding you want to stop biting your nails is easy. Stopping is the tricky part. People decide all the time that they aren’t going to bite their nails any more, just the same way that they make all kinds of promises and plans for New Years resolutions. But willpower isn’t enough to keep you from biting. You have to have some actual remedies.

Don’t give up though because it is going to be hard. You have plenty of reasons to try anyhow. First, it’s really important because other people think it is rude when you bite your nails. People think it is gross, and they judge you because of it. Also, it can hurt your fingers. Your fingertips can get red and sore, and you can even get infections. Then there are germs and diseases you can end up with because the germs were on your nails and you put your fingers into your mouth.

There are a number of different nail biting treatments you can try.

One of the most common treatments is a bitter nail polish. You paint this on just like regular polish, and when you bite your nails it tastes bad. It is usually insufficient to get you to actually quit though. If you think about it, you probably have years of behavior behind your habit, so a simple bad taste isn’t going to make you quit.

Medication. Your doctor or psychiatrist may use prescription medication in combination with behavior therapy. Usually, the combination of antipsychotic and antidepressant is what is used. Unfortunately these medicines are not all that effective in the long run, and can have very negative side effects besides.

Hypnosis for nail biting is another option, and may be a pleasant surprise. First, it has no negative side effects. Secondly, and most importantly, hypnosis works. The key is the way that it is structured. Hypnosis plants suggestions into your subconscious mind. This is the same part of your mind that prompts you to continue in your nail biting.

You may have experienced your fingernail biting as a nervous habit that comes up when you are under emotional stress. If this is the case, hypnosis can be very helpful and can help you deal with the stress as well. That’s an extra added bonus and a good skill to have regardless.
