Do you have the Control?

It doesn’t even matter how hard you try, sometimes bad situations and few unbearable people just don’t give up troubling you, eventually making even a simple job equivalent to climbing rough terrains. When it crosses a certain level and beyond your control, the volcano erupts inside the brain. You shout, get easily irritated, behave frantically, throw things and give a piece of mind to everyone around, whether they are the originator of your reaction or not. The bad temper soon fades away and when your mind is again in relaxed state, you are forced to think, “Why”? Why I had to react so irrationally, why didn’t I ignore, why I am so short tempered, why I don’t have the control, why it was necessary when it could have been avoided?

Getting angry and reacting to a situation recklessly happens to everyone at some stage of life. This is very normal, though repeating the same, does involves a matter of concern. The solution is calming and taming your mind to react more patiently. Easy! No, definitely not. If it would have been that simple, you would be surrounded by saints, angels, priests and nuns all around. So, is there a solution? Every problem is born with a solution. The method of finding it can be different.

Gain control by taking the control into your hands. Your mind is inside you, you are not inside your mind. This can be acquired by practice and as time passes you will be able to gain self-control. Try to find out what are the things which can calm you down, like listening music, going out for a walk, going for a basketball match, basically, learn to deviate. Talk to yourself, it certainly helps. Put your feeling into words and soon you will realize that it’s working. If not into writing, sketch your feelings.

With passage of time you will discover that this jigsaw puzzle isn’t that hard to crack

Mapping the Depth

The most important attribute which can take you to great heights and can also pull you back to the opposite direction, at the same time is concentration. Concentration works as a tonic for brain which enhances the strength, limits and capabilities. Good concentration is a result of hard work. You can easily mold your environment and become a master of any circumstance (good or bad). Concentration act as an antidote to distractions which are responsible for deviation from work.

So, what is concentration and why it is such an important tool? “Concentration” is a word derived from two Latin words, i.e., “con,” a prefix meaning “to” and “Centrum” meaning “center” or “fixed central point”. Thus the word “Concentration”, literally means, “the act or state of bringing to a fixed point or focus”. Mind is restless, always tends to perform vehemently and gets tired easily of continued attention thereby darting here and there incessantly. It fancies whatever is new, attractive and different hence focusing on one thing becomes a tricky job. This involuntary concentration leads to distraction from important duties.

Concentration is a power which is locked inside a treasure box in our brain with a lock. The choice of utilizing this power is up to the possessor. The key is for the one who possess the brain. As this power holds immense unsurpassed capabilities, of both, a destroyer and of a creator, the will and the fortitude to find the right key to open the right lock, is the wish of the owner.

Selective Retention: Another Mystery?

Mind can at times play games beyond the understanding of the wisest of the intellectuals. Selective retention is one such debate.

Selective retention, as researched by scholars over the centuries, is the psychological process by which the mind tends to retain and remember best the things that are in equilibrium with their pre-existing beliefs, interests and attitudes. In simpler terms, students tend to remember only those selective portions of a teachers lecture with which they agree. To simplify it to an even lesser extent, you would only remember the days you got the bonus and would easily forget the ones when you were penalized!

But the debate arises over the fact that if this psychological process always operates and tends to maintain consistency in mind, why is depression and other psychological ailments considered to be cancerous? Why are the frustration levels amongst the youth always sky-rocketing? Why does terror attack in one city triggers a panic globally?

Although the other school of thought argues that selective retention is nothing more than a mere effort to cope up with the loads of information being bombarded every moment, it continues to haunt many psychologists. Mind games, it seems, are never ending!
