Sample the Special Flavors of Maltese Cuisine
The Maltese Islands in the Mediterranean Sea are not only famous for their balmy climate and sun-kissed islands but also for their unique culture which is a mosaic of several different traditions.
The Maltese culinary culture is a delicious example of the blend of various influences ranging from Mediterranean and mainland European to local island traditions. The cuisine of the islands in fact evolved over the long centuries of interaction between the islanders and many invading cultures. Traditional Maltese food is based on seasonal flavors and local ingredients. This is why fish figures as an important part of every meal and is baked, stewed or fried.
The Mediterranean influence on Maltese food is evident in its use of olive oil, varieties of cheese, garlic and seasonal vegetables. Among the dishes that must be sampled are Lampuki or fish pie, Rabbit Stew, Bragioli or beef olives and Kapunata which is the local version of Ratatouille. Visitors must not miss snacks like ‘hobz biz-zejt’ which are rounds of bread spread with tomato paste and stuffed with tuna-veggie filling as well as the pastizzi which are flaky pastries with ricotta or pea fillings.
Important Maltese cities are well-supplied with hotels and lodging options for visitors. Also check out www.ooaha.com for best hotel deals for Valletta which is the capital of Malta.
