Mojito, the Classic Cocktail for a Warm Tropical Night

Though the summer is on its way out in the Northern Hemisphere, for a tropical paradise, a Mojito can never go out of season. A Mojito is traditionally a Cuban highball and its combination of sweetness, citrus juices as well as mint have made it a popular drink for warm nights and a refreshing one after a long, hot day.

Here is how to prepare a traditional Mojito. In a tall glass, put in twelve mint leaves. Cut a lime in four wedges and add them to the mint leaves. Pour in four spoonfuls of white granulated sugar and crush them well so that the oils are released from the mint leaves. Add one and a half ounces of white or light rum and then as many ice cubes as you desire on a hot and humid tropical day. Finally top the glass with club soda and garnish the rim with a lime wheel and a mint leaf.

A Mojito lends itself quite well to variations. Many times Angostura bitters is added to cut the sweetness of the Mojito. Other popular variations include fruit-flavoured vodkas or rums which can be used to make mango, lychee, strawberry or mandarin Mojitos.
