Quaint Lindau Recalls Rich History

Lindau is a historic German town, located in the eastern part of Lake Constance. it is actually an island famous for its ancient churches and monuments and is connected to the Bavarian mainland by bridge and railway.

The earliest settlements in the region go back to the Roman times even though Lindau was first mentioned in a document dated 882 A.D which speaks of the founding of a nunnery on the island. Later St Stephens Church was founded here and then a Franciscan monastery in the thirteenth century. Lindau’s prominence was confirmed when it became a Imperial Free City under King Rudolph I but eventually its significance declined and Lindau was absorbed in the Bavarian kingdom after briefly becoming a part of Austria.

Today Lindau is famous for its historic buildings and ancient churches, all of which stand witness to the rich architectural traditions of past ages. The prime tourist attraction in Lindau is the Harbor entrance along with the Lighthouse. This site has the famous sculpture of the Bavarian Lion which has become the symbol of town and a monument to its past glory. Among other places of interest are the Church of St Peter, the Cathedral “Unserer Lieben Frau”, the historic Town Hall as well as the Promenade on the shores of Lake Aeschach.
