Adelaide’s Victoria Square Holds the Heart of this Lovely City

The fifth largest city of Australia, Adelaide is a favorite destination of tourists because of its balmy climate, places of cultural and natural interest as well as a gracious ambience.

Adelaide is located on the southern coast of Australia and is bordered by the Mount Lofty Ranges on its east while the Gulf of St. Vincent lies on its west. The city gets its name from Queen Adelaide, the wife of William IV. A city of wide streets, broad squares and open spaces, Adelaide owes its pleasant lay-out to Colonel William Light who was the Surveyor General of the colony in early nineteenth century.

Right in the center of Adelaide lies the Victoria Square which is famous for its fountains and monuments. Among the biggest attractions in the square are a few nineteenth century buildings which still retain its old-world beauty. A statue of Queen Victoria stands in the middle of the square and on the northern side is a charming fountain designed by John Dowie. The three figures in the fountain symbolize the three rivers of South Australia – the Torrens, the Murray and the Onkapunga. Next to the fountain are monuments built in the memory of famous explorers Stuart and Sturt.
